It is well said that curiosity is the mother of all inventions and need is always a catalyst in that. Typhoon Turbine and Wireless Power Transmission is a wonderful result of such curiosity. After the devastating, heart-wrenching nuclear power accident that happened in Japan in 2011. He realized that the power sector of the world needs innovation and a shift towards greener, safer and sustainable energy resources. For so long we were occupied with the solar energy that we forgot about the other renewable resources our planet offers. But he believed that the wind energy is quite underrated and it has an equal potential to be the next big thing in the power industry. Ever since the windmills were invented in Europe, only their size increased and nothing else has ever been done in that field. He found the need to rise above conventionality and look at the picture from a different angle. His dedication paid off, he found a way to improve the strength and effectiveness of windmills. Nobody thought that a little change in the design can do such wonders.

A typhoon turbine is a robust, egg-beater shaped wind turbine, designed not only to withstand the incredible force of a tropical cyclone, but also to harness it. It consists of three vertical rotating columns and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from all directions. Its working is based on Magnus effect- the same phenomenon that makes a cricket ball swing in air. The wind make the cylindrical blades rotate which in turn make the central rod rotate due to magnus effect.

Magnus effect is a phenomenon associated with a spinning objects in air or other fluid that makes it move in a particular direction. Basically, a spinning object drags air faster around one side, creating a difference in pressure that moves it in the direction of lower pressure.

Typhoon Turbine vs Conventional Wind Turbines

The propeller based wind turbines are not able to withstand Typhoons. The propellers spin so fast in strong winds that the motor generator burns out or the propellers snap off. But the Typhoon Turbine is designed such that the rate of rotation of the cylindrical columns can be adjusted to control the rate of turbine. This prevents it from any damage due to strong winds.
Another problem with conventional wind turbines is the fact that they must be positioned in the direction of oncoming wind to harness its energy. But the vertical-axis design of Typhoon Turbine has no such limitations. This design also resolves common issues facing propeller-based turbines, such as bird collisions and low-frequency noise from turbine rotation.

Although it is not as much efficient as propeller based turbines in normal conditions. But if we measure its productivity keeping in mind the fact that Japan faces on an average seven typhoons every year it is much more efficient than any energy resources on this planet.

According to the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological laboratory, a mature typhoon produce a level of kinetic energy equivalent to about half the world-wide electrical generating power. The energy from one typhoon can power Japan for 50 years. If the typhoon turbine will be able to harness even just 30% power of the typhoons hitting Japan each year, Japan would be able to power the whole world for several years.

Wireless Power Transmission

It is found by NASA and also confirmed by Japanese Space Agency that wireless power is very efficient in microwave 2-3 GHz Band, even more efficient than using wires. With this fact in mind the Japanese are now developing a space based satellite to collect huge amount of solar power, which is then converted into microwaves, transmitted to a Receiving antenna on the ground, and converted into DC energy for electrical use.  

The invention of Typhoon Turbine and its potential to generate huge amount of energy can be complemented with this wireless power transmission technology. The power generated by Typhoon Turbines can be converted to microwave signals and transmitted all over the world through satellite. The receiving antenna on the ground will capture the microwave signal and then convert it to DC power. This is done by passing the received microwave through rectifying diode, low pass filter and DC to DC step up/step down converter so as to use it to power household electric appliances.
